Abnormal

What is meant by Abnormal? When you are abnormal it means that you have rare or dysfunctional conditions. This can affect your work and your life

What are some criteria that help identify people as abnormal? One such criterion is - distress. If a person is extremely depressed, anxious and unhappy, then he may properly be called abnormal. A drawback here is that most people do not know their own mental state and though they could use the help, they don't want to accept it.

Another criterion that identifies a person as abnormal is maladaptivity. This means that a person is acting or behaving in ways that is not conducive to his or her own wellbeing. The drawback here that if a person acts in a way that is by itself right and just he may still be labeled abnormal because of his dissent or abstinence.

If a person violates moral or social rules of conduct that are the norm in his society then he may be called abnormal and his behavior could be embarrassing and cause other to feel uncomfortable with the individual

In terms of psychology and psychiatry, the criteria that is used to label a person as abnormal is - mental illness. This is done relying on a medical diagnosis. This has come under fire of late as it takes control from the hands of an individual and places it in the hands of people who have their own political and social goals.
