Acute Stress Response The acute stress response is also called as fight -or-flight response. It refers to the body's response triggered by stress to a perceived (not real) danger. During this response, several hormones like adrenalin, cortisol etc are released. Consequently the heart rate is sped up, the digestive system is disturbed and various other autonomic nervous functions are also disturbed leading to loss of energy and strength in the body. As its title suggests, it responds to a stressful condition or fight against a perceived danger. Once if the perceived danger is gone, the system comes back to its normal functioning through relaxation response. But if the stress is very chronic, the relaxation response doesn't happen resulting in various harmful conditions. Though the stress response is important for the body, it is harmful too. In most cases stress response is triggered in situations in which physical action is not possible. This disrupts the sexual response and the digestive system. For more terms click here. |
