Autonomic Nervous System

The autonomic nervous system is part of the brain's nervous system. It controls the activity of the heart and the glands. When a person is facing stress, the autonomic nervous system will cause an increase in the heart rate and blood pressure, as well as an increase in adrenalin secretion.

The autonomic nervous system sends electrical impulses through the nerves to the heart. With these signals, the autonomic nervous system tells the heart to beat. Without the autonomic nervous system, the heart would fail, and the person would die. It takes as few as three seconds for the autonomic nervous system to tell the heart to increase. This is why when anxiety or stress occurs, the person's heart rate will increase immediately, without the person thinking about the process. Problems with the autonomic nervous system will keep the heart rate from returning to normal after a stressful even is over.
