Corticosteroid

Corticosteroid is a steroid hormone that is produced in the adrenal cortex. It is active across many physiologic systems. Some of them are immune response, carbohydrate metabolism, blood electrolyte levels, regulation of inflammation, behavior, protein catabolism and stress response.

There are two types of Corticosteroids. They are Glucocorticoids, and Mineralocorticoids.

Glucocorticoids control the metabolism of fat, protein, and carbohydrate and they prevent phospholipid release, being anti inflammatory

Electrolyte and water levels are controlled by Mineralocorticoids, as they help in the retention of sodium in the body part called kidney.

Synthetic drugs that contain corticosteroid or have a corticosteroid effect are used to treat many ailments as varied as skin diseases to brain tumors.

Synthetic glucocorticoids are used to treat many ailments like dermatitis, asthma, hepatitis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, sarcoidosis, arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and allergic reactions

You also get topical medicines for inflammatory bowel disease uveitis and skin care

You can also use Corticosteroids to keep away nausea. This is usually combined with 5-HT3 antagonists.

The unwanted side effects of glucocorticoids are Cushing's syndrome. The undesired side effects of mineralocorticoids are metabolic alkalosis, hypokalemia, hypertension and hypernatremia.
