Cortisol

Cortisol is a corticosteroid hormone that the adrenal cortex produces in response to some form of stress. Some of its actions are it causes an increase in blood pressure, the sugar levels of the blood, causes women to become infertile, and makes the immune system to become suppressed.

Pregnenolone is used to synthesize Cortisol. This involves C-11, C-17, and C-21 to be hydroxylated, C - 3 to become oxidised, and the C-5 double bond to be isomerized to C-4.

The adrenal cortex delivers aldosterone and a few sex hormones. However it mainly secretes cortisol. .

There is a diurnal variation to the cortisol that you will find in the serum. You will find the levels are very high in the early part of the morning, and the levels are lower in the evening, a long time after you have begun to sleep.

The corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) is impeded by Cortisol. This causes ACTH secretion to undergo feedback inhibition.

When it is released naturally, cortisol has many functions. Homeostasis is restored after stress.

If you are exposed for a long time to cortisol the cells in the hippocampus could get damaged. Learning could be affected as a result.

In pharma parlence cortisol is known as Hydrocortisone. Allergies and inflammation are treated by it.
