Post-traumatic stress disorder

Post -Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) refers to a term given for several psychological consequences of exposure to stressful situations. Such stressful situations may be highly shocking for a person. A person might have experienced a serious physical injury, death threats, threat to psychological integrity etc This condition is sometimes called as post-traumatic stress reaction.

The symptoms of PTSD are nightmares, flashbacks, emotional disintegrity; numb feeling irritability, memory loss, loss appetite, anxiety etc It will take only few months for the emotional effects of distressing or traumatic events to get settled for many people.

But if it lasts more than several months, then the traumatized victim should get diagnosed for psychiatric disorder. But all those who experience traumatic events will not develop PTSD. Some people will have normal grief which is unavoidable. The normal grief will generally settle in few months. PTSD may often be triggered by one or a variety of external factors.
