Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) refers to a tension -reducing technique which involves systematically holding the tension and then relaxing it in specific muscle groups. To start with, the participant completely tenses all muscles in the body and sustains it for several seconds which will usually be to the count of ten.

This process starts with the muscle in the face and carried out to the muscles in the rest of the body. The participant holds the tension for several seconds and completely relaxes it for the same amount of time. This process is repeated several times. In this way, each set of muscles in different areas of body is relaxed. With due practice, the participant masters the art of relaxing his body in few seconds.

PMR is the great technique for reducing stress in the overall body. The tensing and relaxing process will promote both physical and emotional well-being. The progressive muscle relation technique involves the following steps. First and foremost, the participant should lie down in a relaxed environment. Then he should start tensing the whole body by tightly closing the eyes moving the ears up or clenching the teeth etc. Hold this tension for several minutes and inhale. Following this, relax completely and exhale. In this way cause tension to all the muscles and relax them.
