Relaxation Response

The relaxation response is the counterpart of the fight-or-fight response. This response occurs when the body is no longer in a state that is perceived to be dangerous by the mind. At this state, the autonomic nervous system functioning returns to the normal.

During this response, the body experiences movement from a state of physiological arousal. It results in increased heart rate and blood pressure, poor functioning of digestive system, poor flow of blood, and increased release of hormones like adrenalin, cortisol etc and many more responses which can prepare the body to return to a state of physiological relaxation.

As a result, the blood pressure, heart rate, digestive functioning and hormonal levels etc d returns to the normal state of functioning. This response is very natural to occur during acute stress. But at times, during chronic stress where the body is in a state of prolonged physiological arousal, the relaxation response is not normal . It should only be induced through various relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, self -hypnosis etc
