Bernstein's pH Monitoring Stress Tests
Reflux of acid into the food pipe is one of the long term effects of stress. Bernstein's test is used to assess this reflux. It is done by placing a probe in the lower end of esophagus and analyzing the pH of the secretions present there.

Endoscopy

Esophagio gastro duodenoscopy is done to see the inner lining of the upper gastro intestinal tract. A fiber optic flexible tube called endoscope is introduced through the mouth of the person who is sedated and the inner lining of the gut is viewed. Peptic ulcer and reflux diseases are worsened in persons with stress and the effects of them can be viewed with the help of the endoscope.

Mental Stress Tests

This is not as popular as its counterpart. These tests are done to assess the person's susceptibility to stress and his mental ability to cope up with it. There are no gold standard mental stress tests similar to the heart stress test. Different psychiatrists have come with their own testing tools. The tools are different questionnaires with answers to choose from the multiple choices. Points are awarded to the different responses and the aggregate is analyzed to know about the impact and resilience of the person to stress.

Dr. Hans Selye and Dr. Richard Earle of the Canadian Institute of stress have evaluated the person's susceptibility to stress and his mental ability to cope up with it and have categorized the different levels.

The Speed Freak - They are perfectionists who also tend to be faster in doing things.

The Worry wart - The person is unable to stop thoughts and unable to put thoughts in to action.

The Drifter - He is jack of all trades and master of none. He has too many options, but little knowledge of those things.

The Loner - The person don't have social inter actions and always does work alone.

The Basket cases - They are pessimists who develop their own problem thinking every thing is too much and too difficult to them.

The Cliff hangers - These persons have unhealthy habits and they think there is nothing in the world which can harm them.

Among the two, the physical stress tests are much sought after tests. But the mental stress tests are not far behind. The nuclear or the cardiac stress test is the most popular among different stress tests. Though stress tests are not required in stress management programs, they are essential in assessing the vulnerability of the person to stress.
