Susceptibility to Stress
Though stress is a normal physiological phenomenon, not all persons experience similar kind of agony. This can be explained on the basis of genetic traits. More recent researches have shown that most of the persons who suffer undue stress had similar past stressful experiences during their childhood. It is proved that a newborn who receives repeated injections or if repeated blood sampling is done, the pain is perceived as a stressful event and when they grow up, they are more susceptible to stress. Women are twice more susceptible than men.

Stress in Animals and Playing Opossum

Like humans, animals also suffer from stress when they face a hostile environment. For instance , a prey animal like deer encounters a predator like tiger, its body gets geared up to overcome the situation ( in this case running away from the scene - the 'Flight response').

The response of the animal to hostile environment called Opossum is very interesting. Whenever it encounters a predator, it just falls down and pretends as if it is dead. After the predator leaves the place, it gets up and runs away. This response is called 'Playing Opossum' and a short story about a guy encountering a bear is based on it.

Conditions Mimicking Stress

A few physical illnesses like the following have symptoms which mimic a stress disorder.
  1. Hyperthyroidism - There is increased secretion of the hormone Thyroxine resulting in increased heart rate, tremors and sweating which are seen in a stress affected person
  2. Anxiety disorders - These are neurotic disorders producing symptoms like stress. A chronically stressed person may eventually get affected by anxiety neurosis.
  3. Pheochromoctoma - It is condition in which a tumor in the body secretes more adrenaline resulting in symptoms mimicking stress.
  4. Hypoglycemia - In this condition there is a decrease in the blood glucose from the normal levels. This stimulates the secretion of the compensatory hormones adrenaline and cortisol which are the stress hormones

Effects of Stress

'Undue Stress' affects a person physically, physiologically and later psychologically. Initially it affects the individual alone. Buts it goes on to affect indirectly the other members of the family as his attitude and behavior towards them changes. It affects the workplace as the persons professional ability goes down. In the end it may even affect the country economically because of poor productions.

How to Tackle Stress?

There is no new principle involved when it comes to tackling stress. Living things survived all these years on earth by adapting to the hostile environment - the fittest who adapted survived and the rest perished. In the modern era, if the environment is hostile, man changes it to suit him.

Stress can be tackled by combining these two principles. One should either learn to live with the trigger or learn to suppress or change it.
