Causes of Fetal StressFetal stress is caused by a variety of possible complications. One of these is breathing problems. If the baby breathes in amniotic fluid, it can trigger fetal stress. If the mother is not receiving enough oxygen during labor it can also cause the problem. Finally, problems with the umbilical cord can cause fetal stress syndrome. This could be a prolapsed umbilical cord, a knot in the cord, or a cord that is wrapped around the baby's neck. These can often be fixed by the doctor during or before delivery.
Diagnosis of Fetal StressFetal stress is diagnosed through stress tests on the baby. Most often this is external fetal monitoring, where sensors are placed on the mother's abdomen, monitoring the baby's heart rate, as well as the rate and level of contractions. If fetal stress is a concern, a monitor will be attached to the scalp of the baby through the birth canal to get better readings.Early in the pregnancy, fetal stress is diagnosed through fetal non stress tests, which are long periods of observation of the movements and heart rate of the baby while the mother is resting. Treatment For Fetal StressThe only treatment for fetal stress is delivery of the baby. If fetal stress occurs during labor the doctor will take steps to increase the rate of delivery. If labor has not begun, a caesarean section or induction of labor will happen. The goal is to deliver the baby as soon as possible. This can be a challenge for a mom who is not yet to term. She might wonder what will happen if her baby is delivered early. The complications that can arrive from fetal stress are much more serious then having a preemie. It is important to trust your doctors. Remember, they want what is best for you and your baby. If your fetal stress test indicates that your baby is experiencing fetal distress, the best option is delivery immediately!
