Positive vs. Negative Stress



There is a reason why you will feel different depending on the emotions in your body. This is because of the chemical reactions within your body that are produced when you undergo different emotions such as excitement, happiness, fear and discontent.
An overload of adrenaline is produced with negative stress which results in an anxious or fearful feeling. However, despite the negative effects that come from bad stress it can actually still have the benefit of helping providing survival instincts in times of danger.

With positive stress your body produces a number of chemicals including endorphins, serotonin and dopamine which help to provide a relaxing feel or enjoyment. This is similar to what athletes feel when they are competing and when they finish. Your body pushes you to complete a job as a result of the excitement and achievement that comes from the chemicals your body produces with positive stress. Positive stress is accepted since is allows us to feel good as we plan and work on achieving out goal. So what are the specific benefits of positive stress?

Advantages of Positive Stress

There are many positive effects of stress including the ability to realize when things are wrong and need to be fixed. Positive stress also helps our body tell us when we need to do things such as put a sweater on when it is too cold, scratch an itch, move to a new location when necessary and other needs of every day life. Positive stress is also an excellent way of initiating the invention and problem solving process by providing more creative solutions. As a result positive stress has been linked to many scientific discoveries, technological advances and creative designs. Positive stress can also help us to know when we need medical care by altering us to when we are experiencing discomfort or other medical concerns.

Recently two scientists uncovered a new benefit to positive stress after review three hundred scientific papers on nineteen thousand individuals. They found that short periods of positive stress can actually have a benefit for our immune system. This is typically seen when individuals have stress as they sit down to take an exam. This goes to show that there are many positive effects of stress and we can have many more as long as we learn positive ways to relieve stress and benefit our lives.
