How to Tackle Teen Stress
The teen stress should be dealt with both at home and outside home in school.
  • There is a wrong notion among adults that there is no earthly reason for stress in teens. This should be avoided.
  • The first step in tackling teen stress is to identify the signs and symptoms of stress in the teens. The teens should be allowed to talk freely about their problems.
  • Parents and teachers should teach them stress relief methods.
  • They should set only reasonable goals in both curricular and extra curricular activities
There are several treatment models to help the teens cope up with stress. The steps of one such model -
  • Ask the teenager to define stress taking an example of an incident
  • Ask the teens about the their response to that stressful event
  • Explain to the teens about normal stress response and ways of tackling stress
  • Identify the source of stress in teens and help them understand that the same event incites different responses in different persons
  • Teach the teen the best stress relieving techniques.
  • Advise them to avoid unhealthy methods of tackling stress like aggression, avoidance etc.

One to One Model of Dealing with Stress

Step One : Identify the potential sources of stress. Help the teen recognize them.

Step two : Find out whether the teens have any stress related signs and symptoms. If they have any, then discuss with them about the physical and emotional stress and the ways to relieve them.

Step three : Find out whether the teenager has increase in the stress and related problems. If so, it needs long term treatment with the help of a counselor.

Small Group Model of Dealing with Stress

Exercises involving a small group of teens are done. The exercises are related to
  • Mind body connection
  • Ways of reacting to stress

Large Group Model of Dealing with Stress

In this model a larger group of teens is involved. The exercises done are
  • Methods to cope up with stress
  • Self expression of their feelings in forms of poems , essays, drawings
  • Finding solutions to problems narrated in small stories.

Healthy stress relieving methods as framed by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

  • Eat a well balanced nutritious diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid caffeine, tobacco and substance of abuse like alcohol, drugs etc
  • Follow simple stress relief methods like deep breathing, listening to music, recreational sports
  • Develop assertiveness training skills
  • Learn to be practical. Look for an alternative if the task is very stressful.
  • Have high self esteem
  • Learn to say no. By doing this a teenager can sort out important things in his life.
  • Have good sense of humor
  • Watching stress relief cartoons
  • Have a good social relationship
  • Discuss the problems with a trusted person and try to find his view of the problem
  • Engage in hobbies like drawing, writing singing or playing with pets.
Teen stress is very significant as today's teens are tomorrow's adults. The transition will be smooth if they know the causes of teen stress and their stress relief methods, communicate well with others and learn problem solving skills.
