Stressful jobs often need self-helpThere are certain jobs in which people are more likely to experience stress than in other jobs. Police officers for example, experience violence and a lot of stress during their jobs and people answering the 911 phone lines hear things that no one should be hearing, on a daily basis. The dispatchers answering emergency calls have to deal with situations such as (attempted) suicide, heart attacks, and distraught and hysterical people in pain. Over 2000 calls a day have to be answered and people taking these calls must be equipped to handle anything that comes their way. This kind of job can take everything you've got when it comes to straying calm and remaining levelheaded. It is no surprise that these dispatchers, as well as people with other types of emotionally demanding jobs, sometimes have a hard time dealing with the things that they have dealt with at work. Of course there is the option to get things off your chest at work, but what happens when you are safe back in your own home and you start suffering from the symptoms of stress? Most call-takers quit their jobs after having done the job for two years. The most common reason for them to quit: a burnout. People dealing with a lot of stress at work or in their private lives may experience symptoms such as sleeping problems, heart problems, high blood pressure, headaches and may lose the ability to cope with every day life situations. There are self-help groups for stress management and many different types of stress management videos and cds out there. Try going to a group to discuss your problems and resolve them. Every 2 in ten people have dealt with stress problems in the USA, so you are not alone. |
