Studies reveal that yoga can help combat stress

Yoga is becoming more and more popular. It has been around since the sixties but ever since stars like Madonna started to dabble in the physical art of yoga more people have opened themselves up to the physical benefits of this type of exercise. The best know type of yoga in the USA is Hatha yoga. This type of yoga helps you to relax mentally and physically and emphasizes breathing techniques. The result of yoga is general relaxation and this exercise can help you to deal with severe stress problems.

Yoga can help you to get back in shape and improves your posture, muscles and limbs but more importantly yoga can help to lessen tension and stress. If you need to combat insomnia or tension and nervousness this is the right thing for you. Alameda County's Probation Department and Health Care Services Agency run a yoga program for incarcerated youth every day of the week. The idea behind the program is that yoga can help to lessen stress and can teach you how to cope with anger problems at the same time. It is expected that the use of yoga will offer tools for self-transformation. Hopefully the program will lead to a reduction of crime and violence in the community.

Two different ways to measure the results of this program have been used (a 10-point Perceived Stress Scale) and Niroga's IHS30 (30-point Integral Health Scale). These tests show that there is a decline in stress, anxiety and depression as a result of the yoga program. These results were recorded within three months after the start of the program. The same effects have been recorded with cancer patients and people struggling with addictions. It appears that the effects of yoga or any other relaxation exercise technique for that matter, may be more beneficial to us than we might think.
