Stress is not always a bad thing. Nowadays mainly all of us are far too buys doing too many things at the same time and the stress management product market is booming. There are numerous self-help books, tapes, videos and cds and workshops or self-help groups to help you cope with stress and related symptoms. However, many people thrive on stress and would not be able to do their jobs as well as they do on a regular basis, were they not stressed.

Stress is a reaction of the body to situations that are interpreted by our minds as 'dangerous'. Stress releases adrenalin and enables the body to be more alert and quicker in its responses to anything for a certain period of time. This type of response is experienced a lot by police officers and other with potentially dangerous jobs.

If stress is not dealt with properly it can cause physical problems such as stomach ulcers, sleeping problems and nervousness. Professionals like police officers are trained to use the effects of stress in a situation to their full potential but are also taught how to 'wind down' after a stressful situation. If stress is dealt with the right way you can actually benefit from it. It is important that the body is calmed down and brought back to a state of relaxation to avoid stress-related physical problems.

According to psychologist Richard A. Dienstbier from the University of Nebraska both people and animals ending up in a situation that causes them stress are better able to cope and handle problems if they have know how to deal with stress and how to wind down.
